Meet the Team - Sandra Burt

What inspired you to get involved with Pain Support Jersey?

I was introduced to PSJ by a friend in 2016, during my rehabilitation from complex shoulder replacement surgery. I quickly realised that the regular gentle exercises were improving my overall mobility, and I actually began looking forward to the weekly sessions, which was a pleasant surprise!

Can you tell us a bit about your role at Pain Support Jersey and what you enjoy most about it?

In 2019, after a couple of years as a member, I was invited to join the Committee as Honorary Secretary. This role allowed me to utilise my organisational and administrative skills from my working life. Most importantly, it kept my mind active as the new Committee worked to improve and grow the charity.

How do you feel your skills or experiences make a difference in the work you do here?

I'm a perfectionist and thrive when working with a strong team. On the PSJ Committee, everyone brings different skills to the table, and together we've made great strides in spreading the word about our charity and introducing new courses and activities for our growing membership. My lifelong experience with pain and joint replacement surgeries has given me practical insights into pain management. If I can share tips that help others, I’m more than happy to do so.

Is there a particular moment or memory at the charity that stands out as special to you?

I can't think of one specific moment, but I’m proud of the positive feedback and thanks we receive from members. Seeing them make new friends and enjoy the variety of activities we offer throughout the year is a real highlight.

What’s something about you that might surprise people or something unique about yourself?

It’s probably a bit unusual, but I’m apparently Jersey’s most 'bionic woman'! I’ve had 15 joint replacements in the past 25 years, which definitely makes going through airport security interesting!

What’s one thing you look forward to when working with the Pain Support Jersey team?

This is easy – it’s seeing the improvement in our members' confidence and mobility over the weeks and months after they join. In time, they build new friendships and encourage each other every step of the way, which is truly wonderful to witness.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone thinking about getting involved with Pain Support Jersey, whether as a member, volunteer, or supporter, what would it be?

I’d encourage all of our members, regardless of age, to take a moment and think about how they can give back to the charity that’s been there for them. Talk to friends, family, or neighbours—someone might be able to suggest PSJ for sponsorship or even a small donation through their workplace. It’s important to remember that most of the incredible work going on behind the scenes, offering such a wide variety of opportunities for our members, is still being carried out by a very small and dedicated group of people.

How would you describe the Pain Support Jersey team in just three words?

Friendly, hardworking, amazing!
