Meet the Team - Liam O'Connor

What inspired you to get involved with Pain Support Jersey?

I became involved with PSJ through my role as the vocational coordinator at the Pain Service.

Can you tell us a bit about your role at Pain Support Jersey and what you enjoy most about it?

I run the cookery, IT support, pétanque, and horticulture groups, and I also support the Chilly Dippers group. I really enjoy running these groups and working with the members and the PSJ committee. What I find most rewarding is how the members engage and support each other, maintaining such a friendly and positive attitude, despite their pain.

How do you feel your skills or experiences make a difference in the work you do here?

I’ve worked in occupational therapy for many years, and that knowledge and experience helps me deliver group sessions and occupation-based activities. After running PSJ groups for the past three years, I’ve learned what works well and what doesn’t. I always involve and value the opinions of our members when considering changes to the groups.

Is there a particular moment or memory at the charity that stands out as special to you?

The appreciation from the members at the end of each group is incredibly humbling. I first experienced this after running my initial horticulture group, and it’s something I’ve felt many times since. It makes what I do so rewarding. More generally, what stands out to me is how the charity has grown recently, the companionship between members, and the commitment of those working behind the scenes to not only keep things going but to improve and develop the charity further.

What’s something about you that might surprise people or something unique about yourself?

I’m currently studying to become a horticultural therapist, which might surprise people since, until a few years ago, I didn’t enjoy or have much experience with gardening. I got involved in this type of therapy when I joined the Pain Service, and now it’s something I strongly believe in. It’s even inspired me to take up gardening in my spare time, which I find both relaxing and enjoyable.

What’s one thing you look forward to when working with the Pain Support Jersey team?

I always look forward to the Christmas party, where both the committee and members come together. It’s a nice way to celebrate the end of the year, reflect on the charity’s achievements, and catch up with the team in a more relaxed setting.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone thinking about getting involved with Pain Support Jersey, whether as a member, volunteer, or supporter, what would it be?

PSJ does an incredible job of supporting people who experience persistent pain. By getting involved, you’ll help the charity grow and become part of a strong community working toward a common goal.

How would you describe the Pain Support Jersey team in just three words?
