What inspired you to get involved with Pain Support Jersey?
After struggling with sciatica for years, I’ve had a glimpse into how much pain can take over your life. I also have someone close to me living with persistent pain, and I want to learn more about their experience. I’ve always liked working with smaller charities because you can really make a difference. When I met the team at PSJ, I was incredibly impressed by their dedication and professionalism, which inspired me to get involved.
Can you tell us a bit about your role at Pain Support Jersey and what you enjoy most about it?
As Charity Development Officer at PSJ, I handle a bit of everything! From day-to-day tasks like answering emails and collecting post to more strategic work like writing grants, planning events, and developing our business plan. I also engage with the media to help raise awareness about what we do. The variety is what I enjoy most, one day I’m focused on long-term strategies, and the next, I’m helping at a café event or chatting with members. Being part of such a small charity means I can see the direct impact of our work, which makes it all feel worthwhile and rewarding.
How do you feel your skills or experiences make a difference in the work you do here?
I’ve been working in charity management, fundraising, and marketing for years, starting from entry-level jobs and moving up to sitting on senior management teams. This has given me a mix of hands-on and strategic skills. I enjoy working in small charities because you learn to make the most of what you have and be creative with limited resources. As the only paid, part-time staff member, I stay organised and flexible, balancing my strategic responsibilities with the everyday tasks that keep everything running smoothly.
Is there a particular moment or memory at the charity that stands out as special to you?
My first Christmas charity café stands out. The warmth and sense of community were incredible, and I felt part of the team right away. I've felt that way at every event since. Everyone understands the challenges of just showing up. Simple tasks like getting out of bed or having a shower can be exhausting for someone living with pain. We all get that, which creates a caring atmosphere.
What’s something about you that might surprise people or something unique about yourself?
I’m in my car a lot, driving my kids to all their activities and school runs. I love blasting music and singing at the top of my lungs or listening to podcasts like How to Fail by Elizabeth Day and Blind Boy Boat Club. I always bring a coffee with me because, let’s be honest, I need that energy and enthusiasm for the next taxi run! I really like letting people go in traffic. It’s fun to see the surprised look on their faces and a nice reminder that people are usually lovely. Although, if I’m lost and running late, I might not be as quick to let others through!
What’s one thing you look forward to when working with the Pain Support Jersey team?
The energy and enthusiasm from everyone, the committee and our members, is contagious. The committee is so passionate and professional, which keeps me on my toes and motivates me to do my best. For a small charity, we get so much done, and it's honestly exciting to be part of it.
