Meet the Team - Heidi Crossley

What inspired you to get involved with Pain Support Jersey?

I joined PSJ after hearing about it through a friend. I’d just been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and was uncertain about what that would mean for my future. After joining, I met many lovely people who understood what I was going through. Attending exercise sessions in the park not only helped me meet new people but also really improved my fibromyalgia by getting me moving again. Before that, I’d been stuck at home feeling low. Sandra then invited me to join the committee, and that’s where my journey began in October 2022.

Can you tell us a bit about your role at Pain Support Jersey and what you enjoy most about it?

My main role is to handle emails regarding the many recreational activities the charity organises. I also attend the Chilly Dippers most weeks, and when Liam isn’t available, I take the register and make sure everyone gets in and out of the sea safely. I attend the charity cafés and various social events, which I really enjoy, and I also support my fellow committee members by answering any questions from members or prospective members. And, of course, I’m the chief hug giver!

How do you feel your skills or experiences make a difference in the work you do here?

I spent 20 years at Lloyds Bank in various roles, mostly administrative within the Fund Management Department. After my twin boys were born, I spent 10 and a half years as a registered childminder, which I loved, although it likely contributed to my back issues. Being a childminder is a very caring role, and I still keep in touch with many of the children and their parents. Caring for people is in my nature, and that’s why I enjoy being part of PSJ.

Is there a particular moment or memory at the charity that stands out as special to you?

Giving out hugs and feeling the recipient relax, breathe, and recharge. There’s nothing like a good hug!

What’s something about you that might surprise people or something unique about yourself?

I sing in a choir called Vocalize, and for anyone who knows, I’m a second soprano!

What’s one thing you look forward to when working with the Pain Support Jersey team?

Receiving emails from members about how much they enjoyed a recreational activity they attended, and hearing how it made a positive difference to them, both physically and mentally.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone thinking about getting involved with Pain Support Jersey, whether as a member, volunteer, or supporter, what would it be?

If you have skills that could help us, please come forward! We’re always looking for help with the charity cafés, organising or meeting and greeting at talks and events, and mentoring new members. It’s a very rewarding and satisfying role.

How would you describe the Pain Support Jersey team in just three words?

Caring, sympathetic, and motivating!
